Sundays race proved beyond any doubt that the racing group does not lack enthusiasm,
indeed it might be said that happiness is bashing to windward in twenty knots of wind
mixed with rain and light snow. By the time the 1200 start was signaled the visibility had
much improved with the snow turning to rain. Seven well-reefed boats with well-wrapped
crews crossed the line and beat down the harbour.
Once in the bay, crews had settled into the conditions and adjusted sail settings to the
gusty winds. The larger boats were very much in their element with SOUL DANCER
carrying a full main throughout. FINAL DASH was the first to round the Ben Mohr buoy
followed by ELECTRA and SOUL DANCER. Special mention should be made of
MINKE, the smallest boat out today and single-handing but staying well within the pack.
JEEKERS and WESTWIND were also having a grand race while ALACRITY was trailing
the fleet having suffered gear problems early on.
By the time the fleet had returned through Captain Passage the wind was easing and
spinnakers were going up. The nine mile race had been completed in a little over two
hours and it was a cold, wet but remarkably cheerful group which gathered in the
spacious saloon of SOUL DANCER for hot toddies and to congratulate MINKE on a
convincing win.
