CHANNEL ISLANDS #2, 5th JUNE
With the hard core races in Vancouver for the RNSA single handed race plus a flat calm
at 0830 it is hardly surprising that only 3 boats were on the breakwater for the skippers
meeting. The start was delayed to 1015 when right on que the very light southeasterly
became a slightly stronger northwesterly. Much commotion on the start line as spinnakers
were set only to come down again off Deadman Island. It was a slow beat to Batt Rock
but a promising wind when we got there. FANDANGO beat out ALACRITY to the mark
while MADRIGAL was struggling with the light airs. FANDANGO stretched out a good
lead to Welbury Spar as ALACRITY acknowledged the increasing wind by changing to
her normal headsail. The beat to the Channel Islands saw FANDANGO changing
headsails and putting a reef in the main thus allowing ALACRITY to close the gap
rounding the Islands.
The return to Welbury Spar was a further spinnaker run for ALACRITY while
FANDANGO made a broad reach towards Batt Rock to pick up the tide. ALACRITY
rounded first but a slowish, short handed spinnaker take-down saw FANDANGO
closing the gap. Batt Rock was rounded a second time and the run home saw 7 plus
knots on the meter. A slow start but a grand finish that saw ALACRITY take line honors
but FANDANGO take the prize on corrected time.
