McMillan Trophy Race, Sunday, 19 February, 2005
Who would have thought that the SISC McMillan Trophy race sailed on Sunday
in such summery soft weather would be the stage for an exciting duel between
David and Goliath. But that's what happened when the clear blue sky and
balmy sunshine lured twelve boats to the startline at noon.
The soft northerly wind swung to a more easterly direction just before the
start catching out most of the boats. WESTWIND, MINKE, FINAL DASH and
ELECTRA squeezed each other into a triple big Mac at the pin end and the
awesome JJ FLASH entwined their new spinaker like a left handed bindweed.
Only YEOMAN and DERYN MOR seemed to nail the start. Tony McEwan also found
clear air for SAORSA and MADRIGAL and TARA'S WHISPER wisely kept away from
the bump and grind.
Thus the spinakered fleet waltzed their way slowly to Batt Rock with
JJ FLASH easily leading FINAL DASH, YEOMAN and FANDANGO at the mark.
The building ebb tide and head wind scattered the fleet and JJ FLASH was already
at Ben Mohr when the following boats were in Captain Passage.
The oscillating breeze started to fade and the trip home was a slow parade.
MINKE's big yellow spinaker moved her ahead of DERYN MOR and kept her apace
with the lower rated boats ahead. JJ FLASH was already finishing when then
next group were at the sisters. Then YEOMAN, FINAL DASH, FANDANGO and
ELECTRA were becalmed right at the finishing line. But MINKE kept coming and
crossed the line to beat JJ FLASH on corrected time. David had slain Goliath
and the rest of the fleet could only applaud in admiration.
