SPRING ONE DAY REGATTA

Saturday, 19th April was not the best of sailing days, overcast with very little

wind. Despite these conditions eight boats were lined up on the outer

breakwater hoping the forecast wind would fill in. The start of the first race was

delayed to 1035 but even so the start may best be described as gentle. FINAL

DASH and MINKE were first over and soon tacked over to the Salt Spring shore

where the wind appeared to be. Long before the speed buoy the whole fleet

was sitting in a parking lot, and getting to the weather mark off Second Sister

took over an hour for most boats. A gentle spinnaker run back to the club and

that was it for the morning. The race was convincingly won by MINKE who also

took line honors beating out legendary flyers such as ELECTRA and FINAL

DASH.

A break for lunch and some minor excitement as a little wind developed to rattle

the booms of most of the boats as mainsails had been left hoisted.  The rain

started but, “who cares--we have some wind”.  A quick repeat of the first race

followed by a longer race to Batt Rock was the afternoon schedule and so

racing resumed at 1345. By 1400 the rain had more or less killed the wind and

a repeat of the morning adventure ensued. Your scribe who was acting as

starter and score keeper repaired to ALACRITY’s warm cabin and put on the

kettle and a CD.

It was past 1600 when the last boat crossed the line so racing was clearly over

for the day. In this race, line honors went to ELECTRA. However, MINKE

corrected out the winner to make a clean sweep of the day’s racing in very fickle

and unpredictable conditions. Well done indeed Tony and Alex.

The day was by no means a bust. All hands gathered in the clubhouse to dry

out and receive the rating committee’s report and seek clarification on what is

always a difficult subject.  A further distraction was the fabulous aroma

emanating from the kitchen area as the Wood family of Nancy, Thea and David

prepared a chicken curry dinner for us all.  It was a great meal in great company

and with good conversation. Tony Meek, while accepting a bottle of Saturna

wine as winner of both races, thanked FANDANGO for being a no show as it

was clearly a FANDANGO day out there.
