McMILLAN TROPHY RACE, 19TH FEB 2006
It was a cold morning but on
entering the clubhouse a little before 0900 the smell of coffee and
cooking beacon was a real
lift, thoughts echoed by other sailors as they joined swelling group in the
clubhouse. Even the lack of
wind did not dampen spirits in such pleasant circumstances. Early on in
the morning coffee klatch/rules
review we elected to put the start back to 1030 and once on the
docks we put it back to 1115
and made it a fun race. At 1105 a VHF call from Dave Howell who was
driving the Hydro boat
advised 5 knots of wind in Captains Passage and we quickly passed the word
that the full race was on.
Thank you Dave.
The beat to Batt Rock was
hard work but with few holes. ELECTRA was first Round ahead of
FANDANGO followed by FINAL
DASH, WESTWIND, ALACRITY, SAORSA, MINKE and
ORACLE. The tide was ebbing
hard and staying clear of the current tended to take you into dead air.
At one point we had WESTWIND
and FANDANGO dead at Nose Point and ELECTRA and FINAL
DASH dead against the Prevost
shore. ALACRITY, who had been well back, rode the front edge of a
rising wind, which also
brought MINKE, SAROSA and ORACLE back into the race. There were more
holes until clear of Pelly
Point before a close reach to Ben Mor. ALACRITY was first round closely
followed by ELECTRA. I am not sure of the remaining order as
we were to busy getting the
spinnaker up, (slower than
ELECTRA who pulled ahead during this exercise).
At Scott Point the lead boats were ALACRITY, ELECTRA, FINAL DASH and WESTWIND and
this was the order until the end of the race, no one was giving ground.
The results are as below scored time on time.

A note on these results.
The huge lead on corrected time by MINKE reflects the fact that after over a hour of sailing the
race re-started at Pelly Point outward and most of the remaining race was down wind. MINKE’s
high rating coupled with time on time scoring and the limited speed differential on all boats
downwind provided this substantial and well deserved win to Tony who was single handing.
The next race is Round
Prevost on 5th March. This
is followed by A combined one-day
regatta and Club Social on
the 18th March. It’s a St Patrick’s Day event with dinner in the clubhouse
with other club members after
the racing. Details to follow.
