SALT SPRING ISLAND SAILING CLUB

ROUND PREVOST, 5^TH MARCH 2006

At 0830 the wind piped up from the South East and it looked as if the threatened gale

force winds might materialize. In fact this wind only lasted about 40 mins and was

probably the front going through, as things became alot quieter as race time approached.

Eight boats crossed the line in light winds and tacked down the harbour contemplating

which would be the best way round Prevost with the strong ebb running for much of the

day. Only SOUL DANCER elected to fight the current through Captain’s Passage. Keith

reported a good run through but light winds on the other side. The rest of the fleet elected

Anti clockwise and it was ELECTRA first around the light off Pt. Lidde closely followed by

ALACRITY and FANDANGO. There was a longish gap before FINAL DASH lead the

balance of the fleet round the point. ELECTRA and FANDANGO stayed close to the

Prevost shore at Portlock Point to stay out of the tide but also stayed out of the wind.

ALACRITY kept going towards Enterprise Reef and was rewarded with a major backing

of the wind to carry the spinnaker up Trincomali Channel to develop a goodly lead.

The wind strengthened considerably before Pelly Point and FANDANGO blew her Spin.

ALACRITY suffered a minor knock down and managed to detach the sheet from the spin.

and that slowed us up considerably. AT Second Sister ALACRITY still held the lead but

the wind was going fickle. FANDANGO found the wind on the South side and slipped

ahead. FINAL DASH was creeping up but was not able to pass ALACRITY.

These three crossed the line before the wind went very light indeed and it was a long

time before WESTWIND lead the remaining fleet across the line.

0900 in the Club house for coffee, muffins and race instructions. Bring a lunch and be

prepared to go directly to the Happy hour 1700 to 1800 after the racing and prior to the

Irish dinner
