Single-Handed Race August 19, 2007

Sunday’s single handed race started out in very dismal conditions.  Drizzle, no wind and low clouds left the few participants wondering if the race should be postponed to next week.  Eventually 5 skippers showed up and we decided to give it a go.  Imp, Electra and Impossible got ahead after a start in 1-3 knots northeasterly.  Shortly after we had the famous 180 degree wind shift and were now beating out of the harbour in 2-3 knots of wind.  Imp as usual read the conditions right and stayed close to the sisters and it paid off, and she rounded Bat Rock closely pursued by Electra.  Arbitrage and Final Dash had now passed Impossible and were trying to close the gap to the leaders who were slugging it out up front.  Impossible showed a lot of potential in the very light conditions and managed to hang on to the rest of the fleet despite a couple of tactical errors.  The order across the finish line was Imp, Electra, Arbitrage, Final Dash and Impossible.  I should mention that we finished in building wind and sunny conditions.
