Colbanli results

Nine boats turned out for the Bas Colbanli memorial race. The group welcomed Caliente for her first race after a long absence. The course was set as the “great circle” counter-clockwise around Prevost. With the brisk 10 knot wind we were optimistic that we could complete this fairly long race, but we set a half-way point to take times, just in case. Caliente took an early lead in the short tacks heading up the harbour. Imp played the wind shifts well and stayed very close to the leader until clear of Second Sister when the red boat quickly disappeared. Soul Dancer was cleverly cutting the corner at Batt Rock when Final Dash, who was single handing, called to remind her of the course. It was Caliente, Imp, Final Dash and Arbitrage at the deep shoal buoy and they stayed that way for the rest of the race. The five trailing boats cleared Prevost in time to see Caliente disappear into Captain’s Passage and had some fun changing places during the second half. Minke, also single handed, pulled her big black and yellow spinnaker and passed the 5 pack on the run to Ben Mohr. Baron Rouge, with her classic lines, looked spectacular and hopefully Irie’s crew, who had their cameras out, got a few good pictures of her. Soul Dancer suffered a serious equipment failure and was unable to fire a broadside while within range of Irie. Klaathem overtook Minke on the reach through Captain’s Passage and we watched with dismay as Minke again readied the back and yellow for the run back to the club. Unfortunately, the big sail went in the water, which stopped her for while, and probably knocked her out of second (and maybe first) place. Congratulations to Caliente on her return. Her average speed, not accounting for tacks, was an impressive 6.1 knots.
