MacMillan Race Feb. 10, 2008
Eight boats turned out Sunday, expecting dark clouds and cold rain. We had almost everything but! (see photos). Most boats bunched at the windward mark for the start and with the gusty conditions there were a few close calls (and some yelling?) at the line. As the group headed down the harbour the wind shifted from beam reach to dead ahead and jumped from 5 knots to 15 knots in seconds. Everyone had to keep a close watch on their main travellers to avoid being knocked over. Close to the first mark at Batt Rock, the gusts became even more severe, boats round up and even did accidental tacks, which is pretty rare. Several skippers elected to reef their mainsails. Alacrity, Imp and Fandango were first round and it was a relief to have the wind now behind the boats. A few brave souls hoisted spinnakers for the downwind run to Ben Mohr, near Active Pass, but the gusty shifting winds made the big sails hard to control. The wind lightened up just past Prevost Island, giving everyone a break and bunching the fleet a little. Imp, Alacrity and Fandango stayed out front round the second mark and the wind picked up again on the homeward run. We got blasted again through Captain’s Passage and again there was a scramble to reef mainsails. The wind held to Second Sister then lightened for the run into Ganges, now mostly on the beam. Soul Dancer managed to sneak by Fandango in the high winds and was close to Alacrity and Imp who was first over, at the finish. Soul Dancer edged Deryn Mohr for first, although Kevin deserved it more. He sailed single handed and flew his spinnaker!
