SSISC spring regatta results
March 9, 2008
The forecast for the spring regatta was wet and cloudy but the promise of good food lured 9 boats, skippers and crew to the outer dock for the 10 am skipper’s meeting. Due to a total lack of wind, the start was delayed to 11am. A slight breeze from the north allowed us to start the first leg to Grace Point at the breakneck speed of 1/5 knot. Imp, Electra and Fandango quickly took the lead in the light air. About 10 minutes in, the faint breeze swung round to the south and a few boats launched spinnakers before rounding for the beat to the speed buoy. Deryn Mohr and Minke stayed close to the fast boats, but Imp, Fandango and Electra finished first, second and third. Irie suffered from no flying sails but hung on to finish an hour later than the rest of the fleet while Dreki elected to come in for lunch.
After a leisurely lunch at the dock and again with little wind, we debated whether to re-run the event or try a start at Second Sister. Seven boats were motoring out to Second Sister when Imp’s motor broke its mount and gurgled into the chuck. This proved to be the most exciting event of the race but unfortunately eliminated Imp, who sailed back to make repairs. After a spinnaker start, Electra and Fandango pulled ahead and finished 1, 2 with Alacrity’s big blue and white close behind. After a few beverages on the docks the group moved to the club for a fine dinner and bar hosted by Jim Ballentyne. Full results are below.
