Channel Islands Race June 1, 2008

Another great day on the water for the Channel Isles race. Seven boats turned out for a circuitous course to Batt Rock - Welbury Spar - Channel Isles - Welbury Spar - Batt Rock and home. Caliente took an early lead for the beat out of the harbour as all boats, except Final Dash (who decided to go crabbing at the start line), made use of unusually consistent winds out of the harbour. Spinnakers went up briefly after rounding Batt Rock for the short reach over to Welbury and where quickly doused on rounding Welbury for the beat to the Channel Isles. Caliente continued to stretch her lead over the rest of the group and passed around the back of the Channel Isles well before the next boat. Spinnakers were raised again with varying success as boats made the run back to Welbury Spar with Arbitrage who had elected to race "No Flying Sails" holding on to second place closely followed by Electra.

This order did not change, after rounding Welbury and Batt Rock with Caliente crossing the finish line 30 minutes ahead of Arbitrage and Electra with the rest of the fleet following closely behind. Results on corrected time: Caliente, Electra and Arbitrage (see enclosed for times). Congratulations to Norbert for the third place finish, he has obviously read his Chapman's guide to Seamanship awarded for his last place finish in the Round Saltspring!

After the race we all enjoyed food and refreshments courtesy of Dorothy on Oasis, Bob Jones's the newly acquired, blood spattered Benniteau 41. Having made a good start to the race, technical problems forced Oasis to the back of the race but the boat has now been christened or is was it blooded into the Saltspring sailing fleet. A valiant and selfless Kevin Morris doing a fine job of trying to prevent the boom crossing during an unscheduled jibe, with his forehead. He survived with a few stitches and a nice shiner!

Wednesday July 30, 2008

Your intrepid reporter, Greg Slakov, went out as crew for Craig and Megan Leitch in the powerful Tigger J last night. As has been the case several times this summer, a solid 10 knot SE breeze took us all to Ben Mohr Rock and back in a fast race, in which we reached speeds of 8 knots periodically. I have not crewed on “big boats” for a long while, and have a new respect for all the work that has to be done!
