Ground Hog Day Race Report Jan 25th 2009

Starting with a wonderful brunch prepared by June Scott and numerous helpers, we had a reverse handicap start with the first boat crossing the line at 1200 hours. The weather was mild (by Albertan standards), the sun was shining, and we had a great turnout of 12 boats. Starting at the very back of the fleet it was difficult for us to monitor the progress of the race. The relative light winds with frequent large shifts made it a challenging race for everybody. It turned out to be a perfect day for Boomer who quickly gained the lead and managed to hold on to it for the remainder of the race, sharply pursued by the other favorite (Imp). Part of Boomer's success was undoubtedly due to Scott's new strategy of letting June remain on the boat until the finish. One must also presume that Imp was working on her upcoming handicap adjustments and therefore did not challenge Boomer. Another notable incident was Fandango's exciting duel with Caliente, from Bat Rock to Welbury spar where they decided to take a little time-out and clean guano of the marker with their genoa. The spar looks much better now and Fandango is up for sales anyway, so the smell shouldn't be a problem (providing the boat is sold off island). Attached is a picture of Fandango taken shortly before the incident. As you can see, spirits were still high at the time.

Last but not least, a big welcome to Gyle and Sam who did very respectably in their Tanzer 26. We hope to see you out for more races . All in all a wonderful sunny day and the final results were (I think):

1st Boomer

2nd Imp

3rd Caliente

4th Electra

5th Fandango

6th Deryn Mor

7th Soul Dancer

8th Irie

9th Baron Rouge

10th Tara's Whisper

11th Empezar

DNF Lily

Cheers
