Wednesday Night July 1, 2009

Flat seas, blue skies, streaming sunshine and a 10-15 knot steady northerly wind was the perfect setting for last nights race.  A fleet of smaller boats fought a close race in the breezy conditions.  Kay D, Emperzar, Liquid Assets and Impossible made up the small but quality fleet. We set the course to windward for the start round the Ganges marker buoy and then to Batt Rock and back. Kay D was the first around the mark followed closely by Impossible, Emperzar and Liquid Assets.  Chutes were set by  everyone except LQ and we roared downwind to Batt Rock on the ebbing tide . Kay D rounded first with Impossible right on her stern followed by Empezar and LQ who had gone very well down wind with NFS. The wind picked up and all the boats were somewhat over canvassed. Kay D managed this strong wind the best  and gradually moved ahead. Empezar started to go quickly and finished right on the heels of Impossible at the finish. It was certainly a wonderful way to spend Canada Day evening.

PS Liquid Asset's time was estimated – Steve, if you want a more accurate time next race, give us your actual time!

Wednesday Night July 8, 2009

We raced in very light winds and somewhat optimistically decided to sail to Batt Rock and back.

Kay D slipped ahead in the variable conditions followed by OASIS, SOUL THYME , IMPOSSIBLE and JACANA (Jim Monger's C&C 25 who I persuaded to join us with yours truly as crew sailing NFS and rating CC about 238+18+3+6 = 265 ).
I don't know any times but Kay D was way ahead of OASIS followed by SOUL THYME and IMPOSSIBLE close together. Jacana was doing quite well up wind but motored back.

SE breeze, about 5 knots, with some holes. The course was set – to Ganges shoal, back to Grace point, through the finish line, and go twice around if there is enough wind. There wasn't. Final Dash not only won the race, but its crew made the tactically brilliant decision to head to the picnic benches at the breakwater after realizing that not all of the boats would be able to finish twice around.

Empezar had an awesome first beat, and was clearly in the lead (corrected) near the Sisters after making her way through the shifts and lulls very well indeed.

Greg Slakov on Imp.

PS Imp is coming out of the water for a general refit. The keel is wobbling, the foredeck has a hole in it, and the engine falls off periodically. Tell me, what colour do you think we should paint her???

Wednesday Night July 22, 2009

Beautiful day with 8 boats out, winds from 1 to 17 knots and holes on the way out and the way back.  Boomer was caught in the Bermuda no-wind triangle and missed most of the marks.  Final Dash aided by the crack crew (Josh, Dan, David and David) took first again!  Final Dash took the lead early and never gave it up.  Oasis, Caliente and Soul Thyme traded places a few times.  Empazar, KD and Impossible got held up going out but finished with good wind making the results close all round.

Wednesday Night July 29, 2009

This race was held on the day with the hottest recorded temperature ever in Vancouver (Airport) - I think it was 33.8 degrees there.

From Ole on Caliente:

“We had very little wind and it died completely towards the end.

The course was "MAX" and Grace Point to port, but even that was too long.

Ole”
