Jack Langdon Race
Sunday October 24, 2010
Race morning on October 24 dawned grey and blustery in the wake of the first fall storm of the season, which mostly missed southern British Columbia but left enough disturbance in the air mass to make for excellent racing conditions. The southeasterly flow feeding the receding low gave winds between 10 and 15 knots on mostly flat seas for most of the Jack Langdon reverse handicap race on a course of Batt Rock, Ben Mohr, Batt Rock and home. Seven starting boats all finished the race. Start order was Empezar, Deryn Mor, Paramour, Soul Thyme, Velica, Imp, and finally Caliente about 45 after the first start.. Boats trying to keep their spinnakers up on almost every leg met with a range of success and that strategy was balanced by other skipper's decision to make the most of the tidal currents through Captain's Passage, resulting in some effective position improvements in the pack as the race progressed. It was clear, however, that the two lead boats, Empezar and Deryn Mor, were sailed most competently as they started first and second and finished similarly, not giving up much lead at the end of 13 miles; congratulations to skippers Gyle and Kevin and their effective crews. The final order of arrivals was: Empezar, Deryn Mor, Paramour, Imp, Caliente, Soul Thyme, and Velica. There were some very close finishes; with perhaps 10 to 15 minutes between the first and last boats.
