Refreshments will be served on Saturday, January 19th at 7 PM in the Clubhouse, at which time Nick and Jenny Coghlan will present a fascinating account of their recent sailing adventure to Haida Gwaii.
This will be the first of a number of informative sessions related to a planned 2019 summer cruise to these enchanting and mystical islands.
The following summary was graciously provided by Michael Clark:
In 2012 Nick and Jenny Coghlan presented a slide show to the Sailing Club and CPSS members on “Winter in Fireland”. This highlighted their experiences rounding Cape Horn and wintering in Chile’s southern fiords aboard their Vancouver 27 sloop.
They completed their circumnavigation of the Pacific in 2017, retired to Saltspring Island and joined the Sailing Club. Between stops on their long voyage they stored their boat and Nick returned to work as a Canadian diplomat in Pakistan and most recently as our Ambassador to South Sudan. His book on that experience “Collapse of a Country” describes the challenging experience that he and Jenny had while serving there.
Now fully retired, Nick and Jenny undertook a cruise to Haida Gwaii in the summer of 2018 and will share that experience with us at a club event on January 19. Nick and Jenny are both avid photographers and their talk will be well illustrated and offer good advice and insight for those that are considering joining the Club’s own cruise this coming summer.
Even for those who do not imagine a long summer voyage, their talk should still be both entertaining and informative. Good for all armchair sailors!
