Hot Rum Race – January 1, 2014
Race Report (courtesy Martin Herbert – ‘Kay-D’ and contributing guests)
It was warm — for a New Years Day — and dry. But there wasn’t a breath of wind. Nine boats with enthusiastic crews aboard went for the bob-about anyway, and I think it could be said that all had a grand time. In recognition that the course had to be short enough to get back for lunch, it was decided to sail from the Club to the trimaran anchored down in the harbour and back again. Less than a mile. It took the line honours boat over an hour to cross the line.
This race is advertised as a No Flying Sails race, and to put up a spinnaker means you have disqualified yourself. As you can see from the results below, self-discipline was a bit of a problem, leaving only 3 boats in contention. Congratulations, Radiant Heat, Wildfire. and Soul Thyme.
There was some very interesting moments as boats crowded together around the trimaran mark. No protests were filed, except for Greg’s, which was summarily ignored.
The prizes were all rum-related: Tony B. got the Harlan’s Rum Truffles for actually winning, and random selection awarded Roger and Keith the Mount Gay 26-er and the Appleton’s Rum sampler respectively.
Special thanks to Martin, Tony M., Greg, Gyle, and Keith for getting the tables and chairs set up for the Hot Rum Luncheon. (And if there was anyone I didn’t mention who helped, well, thanks to you, too.) That took a load off the Staff Captain. Well done.
