RACE-CRUISE TO SATURNA

July 27, 2019 @ 9:00 am - July 28, 2019 @ 5:00 pm

July 27-28th is a scheduled race/cruise weekend event for all SISC Power and Sail boaters interested in coming together to enjoy some of the best cruising grounds in the world.

The weekend is designed to satisfy the (I’ll start when I wake up and have coffee and breakfast) as well as the (be on the start line on time or you lose) groups. Or maybe a combination thereof (it is, after all, a two day event).

Power boats, cruising sailboats, and SISC’s racing contingent are all encouraged to participate in the fun.

(Gyle Keating (Shingebiss), who has put this weekend together, has ensured that there is something for everyone: some social time, some practice of our marine knowledge and skills, some racing, some good food, more social time, all in a great location.)

The destination for the event is a raft up in Boot Cove just South West of Lyall Harbour. There is no land access from Boot Cove, so if you feel a need to go for a walk, or you think you might run out of “water”, bring your dinghy. It is just a short run to the store etc. in Lyall Harbour.

The schedule is:

Saturday, 9:00: Skippers meeting on the club breakwater (for racers or those who want to race/cruise the same course as the people engaged in this friendly ‘off-book’ race). The course will be laid out at that time.

9:30 Start for boats racing, use the club start line. Cutoff time for the race is 4:00.

Finish line is the transit between U58 and UJ. (U58 is located just South of the entrance to Lyall Harbour and UJ marks a rock in the centre of the entrance to Lyall Harbour.)

Cruisers are encouraged to do a predicted time plot and those doing so will be entered into a draw for an amazing prize. Cruisers doing a predicted time plot can opt for going around the bottom of Prevost if they so wish.

Those participating in the race should take their own finish times and give them to Greg Taylor. The winner of leg one will also receive an amazing prize.

After crossing the finish line, and getting well clear of other vessels, everyone is encouraged to do a man overboard drill consisting of deploying your man overboard pole and light, then using your recovery collar towed behind your boat to bring the pole in close enough to recover. At least one lap of the pole must be done and sail boats are encouraged to do it under sail.

Race boats will receive a one minute deduction from their elapsed time if successful and a one minute addition if not.   Power boats and cruising sail boats can add or subtract one minute from their predicted time if successful.

Once we are all rafted up and settled in, some questionnaires will be handed out and the most successful will receive another amazing prize (you may have noticed a pattern here).

Bring your favorite potluck contribution, your barbeque if required, your libations, and most importantly bring your appetite.

Plans for Sunday will be laid out Saturday night.

Please let Greg Taylor know by email (racing@saltspringsailing.ca) if you plan to attend so we can do some planning regarding the raft up in the cove.

We look forward to seeing many of you in Boot Cove in 10 days or so. It promises to be a fun club event.
