In Members, Stories 2024

Usually held on a Saturday, this year’s action-packed annual Safety Day is on Friday, April 19.  Fire extinguisher checks will be set up in the turnaround by the gatehouse between 10 am and 2 pm that day.  Members can just show up and have that done.

If you want a safety check done on your boat, please email the Safety Team at safety@saltspringsailing.ca and request a time between 9 am and 2 pm.  Please provide your name, the vessel’s name, and your slip number.

Diver Chris West will be at the Sailing Club on Safety Day from 9:00 a.m. onward for as long as needed. He will do inspections only and give a report on zincs, props, rudders, paint condition and any strike damage for $25 cash or e-transfer. Any work needing doing will be by appointment at a later time.  If you would like to engage Chris’ services, please email safety@saltspringsailing.ca with your name, vessel’s name and your slip number.

You won’t want to miss the family-friendly visit of the Coast Guard and their 47 foot motor lifeboat Cape Naden and the Zodiac Hurricane fast rescue craft, coming to F Dock from 10 am to noon!  Bring the family and the grandkids for tours and demonstrations.  The crew will provide…

  • A brief overview of the Search and Rescue (SAR) system in the Western Region and information on the SAR coverage zone for the Ganges Station.
  • Tours of both vessels.
  • Show and tell about the gear they use for medical and vessel Search and Rescue taskings.
  • A hands-on demo of the rescue cradle and how it is used to extract people from the water (volunteers may be required).
